Nakajima Suisan Grilled Fish

There's always a long queue for grilled fish at Nakajima, no matter what time of the day it is. On average, we had to wait for about 30- 45 mins to get a seat during dinner time and another 15mins for the food to arrive. It is well worth the wait though. The bentos (consisting of the mains, rice, salad, pickles and miso soup) are probably some of the tastiest and most value for money you can find at Takashimaya. Oh and by the way, don't stupidly join the back of the queue, you have to order at the counter first, collect your table number then join the queue!

We highly recommend the Akauo Kasuzuke (red snapper pickled in sake lees, above, $13.50), which had chunky, firm flesh. The salad that came on the side was refreshingly good. Think this was on promo for the day, so is cheaper than the what's stated on the ala carte menu, so it was a good deal!

We also tried the Akauo Saikyo (red snapper with saikyo miso, $13.50). We preferred the other style because it was smokier and saltier. This one had a cleaner, more fishy (but not in bad way) taste.

Can't really remember what this one was already, could have been the Saba Mirin ($11.50). In any case, you can't go wrong with almost any fish at Nakajima (:

We also recommend the Mero Saikyo (Grilled cod fish in Saikyo miso sauce). Its slightly more pricely at $16.50 but definitely worth every single penny.

Btw they debone most of the fish so its really convenient!

Nakajima also does a very decent grilled squid ($11.50). Usually, S refuses to eat any kind of squid because they taste like 'rubber bands'. This one, however, even S eats. It's tender, with a nice char and delightfully marinated in some kind of teriyaki sauce.

We plan to visit Nakajima again this month as they are having some major December festive season promotion!
