<div style="text-align: justify;">
Shun Feng is highly raved for its yummy crayfish soup. There was a long queue already at 11:30 am and we waited for almost an hour. We ordered the large crayfish soup ($10) and a sliced mackerel soup ($7) which almost wasn't enough for three people. Took a glimpse around and noticed most customers had a large bowl of soup to themselves. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We wanted to try the crystal horfun ($0.50) which came doused in soy sauce and crispy shallots. To our dismay, they ran out of horfun shortly before our turn, so we had to settle for the white rice (same price).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
A closer look at the menu. Sadly, they don't seem to do lobsters any more, or else the $28.90 one sounds quite worth it. By noon, the abalone version was sold out!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Can't go wrong with chili padi / sambal and crayfish (:</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Each large bowl came with three whole crayfish (small ones), homemade meat balls, sliced dory, tofu and tomatoes. The crayfish was fresh, tender and slid off the shell easily. It also did not have a fishy aftertaste. We also enjoyed the meatballs which were packed full of ingredients like mushroom. The soup on the other hand was a bit of a let down. We went in with high expectations as everyone was saying how rich and creamy it was, but it turned out to be much lighter in taste.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJk4Jsso3cWgcWwnaYkWESEp1UqG1hvQHGo80Poh_1TqM0lJxEbVb3hPdsXvx7sHhfkUfC5FiFfqoaVPPgTk0I1dQXRM_ppuq2lKsNlIzChmvjYHaNuQk2TTEffuI4lOJZ5M0u75zkF7oQ/s640/IMG_20170805_130423_986.jpg" width="640" /></div>

<br />
The mackerel soup came in the same broth but with two prawns, tofu, meatballs and a generous portion of sliced mackerel. The fish was more firm and tastier than the dory. <br />
<br />

<br />
Overall a pretty decent meal. Not sure if we would be back to brave the queue again though.<br />

Restoran Ya Wang is pretty hard to find because it's not on the main street. The easiest route from City Square Mall is to head to the curry fish head place. Once you are past it, you can then jaywalk to across the main road on the right. Restoran Ya Wang is located right in front of a parking lot.</div>

<br />
For those who need to plan in advance, here's a snapshot of their menu! The zichar dishes look tempting hor, maybe should come back for lunch with the family some day!<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="616" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdV7wWxp1RTMzt7qwiNrN40DgMlPu29qBMimHTtU3vQW6rIzQ_74X2wuHs33QDP1zvTJN04JrgeLL5lrKB1J6LN1iIM3j_aqUwK7gNDVE17zFfPGkuHnv0EkCA3L-EuxAbvs_WCMC4_6g/s640/IMG_20161218_154718.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A lot of customers were having their roast duck noodle (7rm). So as typical Singaporeans, we also had to try. The noodles were QQ but the sauce was your run-of-the-mill soya sauce concoction. Serving was on the small side, I think one person could eat like two of these plates.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="628" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPo-H_NyYePJPPaLGnXcQA9mztw6FPLFN3rD60lS7HHI0m0ViwMi_MYer3vDsJcG817zLjIoENGWHs0KGoPkDio8ganKgP2C_EO__QpI4NiIwSHK_JgzNMdSiFEKg_m8YVqfpBaD7nfJw/s640/IMG_20161218_154801.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of course, have to order the signature herbal roast duck rice (7rm)! Restoran Ya Wang is supposedly the consultant for Dian Xiao Er. While the duck was decent, the herbal sauce was disappointing -- they barely drizzled a tablespoon of sauce over your rice lor. And it was quite mild. (You need to pay 5rm to top up the sauce) I think we still prefer DXE.</div>
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
S wanted some roast pork because it 'looked good' hanging by the window. It was quite salty and totally not crispy at all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Perhaps we will give it another try in a bigger group - ordering the whole herbal roast duck.</div>

If you recall, we had an earlier <a href="http://marchingseason.blogspot.sg/2015/11/kim-dae-mun-korean-cuisine-concorde.html"><span style="color: #e06666;">post</span></a> on Kim Dae Mun at Concorde Hotel. It has since been relocated, to the front of the hotel, which is much more visible. Hope it doesn't get too crowded :x Prices seemed to have gone up a notch -- Bibimbap now costs $0.50 more and the Steamed Saba went up by almost a dollar! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Even more spacious than before. Regulars will find the furniture familiar. Now there's even a queue ticket system (can't remember if this was already there haha). <br />
<br />
There's another counter for drinks (incl. soju) & ice cream.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb3cWzbje3u9SFpLCaMYFHImMfA7CTQ5BiJoOyXfGq6S5lJh-1cbufIOXZ2iJeUbaOAWi69X5FF56dogPSvcsfoFOoRdBgSi0LF-K6lxh9XZBn1ohSapxzZsC7dM2MqyqTY5TSuWOXJx8/s640/IMG_20160917_175030.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
This time round S had to go for the Steamed Saba ($9) while Sher settled for the Bean Paste & Vegetables Soup ($7.50). Both dishes came with a bowl of white rice and a side of your choice (cabbage kimchi, cucumber kimchi or ikan bilis).<br />
<br />
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1tqOaAv5gyPTA7j5fEm1GGhz_ulxBzXFrHLaN9pPxynk1bvLCJlNMN-YGMIA80rpK_MyWrtkNhwXCJJ9GlJzcYVcel-3HqN-5VvSm5YMsEEdVFSTSmKJrrQCJEBic3BITcpu1AutmPEE/s640/IMG_20160917_175348.jpg" width="640" /><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lets talk about the Steamed Saba first! This dish is so unique that Kim Dae Mun is the only place we know of that serves it in Singapore. It's a huge & tender hunk of saba (mackeral) that's stewed with a rich, midly spicy tomato-ish sauce. Good enough for 2! This is a homely dish that goes perfectly with the rice. Also comes with a whole boiled potato. Sher likens it to Ayam brand canned tuna :')</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="638" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvQUUssS2AdG_dT4s0Mg7P7DtYyLN-CcuHgeLgcFp4DBOSii78D-RfTgGsSUzi1ZbZ3DmbyVzInVCUaEbWd49-4Oc0mALPNHjIgHLJfMXyB4l1yZlXceZV3Xy3lx1sAfUV93_D974OAAU/s640/IMG_20160917_175314.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next up is the Bean Paste and Vege Stew which Sher opted for the non-spicy version. As you can see, the bowl was filled to the brim with plenty of assorted vegetables and seafood. The best part is the tasty (miso) broth which you'll definitely slurp every last drop.<br />
<br />
We will definitely revisit Kim Dae Mun if we are around the vicinity! Maybe the Pan-Fried Sliced Fish next?</div>

<br />
On our <a href="http://marchingseason.blogspot.sg/2015/11/alexandra-village-food-centre.html"><span style="color: #e06666;">previous visit</span></a> to Alexandra Village Food Centre, the famous claypot laksa was closed. This time we're back again as promised. It was 12pm and the queue was far too long a wait for an empty stomach, so we decided to have a bowl of herbal Bak Ku Teh first.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnWxdlO7QL4rRK5Yx_fvO-j2nfLcorvnboTQWjaPYZBar0yQzsS3lO23zcy6PWA7rwJmbm2d0xk91P7LBrbdNRlRoxVeQ_1wPq_tnE-7hTnnAoharKQ4DlzG5_mRTYgwdvKL_XN9n93XQ/s640/IMG_20160730_133246.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Our favourite herbal bak ku teh ($6) (: We were quite lucky there was no queue. If only the soup was refillable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="634" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCE5t3drTmHfGEih0P781ii07ADHCvMlxWEj8ZStbVZUeKyVHafT0dh8E6TWw0cWQnvwll6fjxNCN3YTUbV7Y0_JKAs94nFLxlxzMu8zltso2ucJdmhgfdPTSIQC9PVVT0xtLW-3VYe3s/s640/IMG_20160730_172054.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
After filling our tummies, we went back to queue for the laksa. The queue was still long but at least we were half full. 45mins later, S finally came back with a medium ($4.50) bowl of laksa. We counted exactly 2 prawns, 2 fish cake, 2 taupok and 4 cockles. Very miserly portions. The sauce and chili was flavorful and rich though. S slurped up every drop of sauce.<br />
<br />
Lesson learned: if we are going to queue so long, might as well go for the biggest size.<br />

S heard of this IKEA crawfish party from his colleague and insisted we had to get tickets. So we managed to book a table for the 8pm slot on Friday. Tickets were going at $25 apiece, but if you are a IKEA member (which we weren't), you could get a $10 IKEA voucher. Little did we know that registering for the membership was free -- this meal could have been $15 only la.</div>

Lucky we were there early, the queue behind us stretched all the way down the stairs and into the first floor. Actually it made sense to be kiasu, because it was 8pm already and we were all starving. Might as well be the first in line to the food!</div>

Standard IKEA fare. The vege meatballs is actually quite good. There's like corn and carrots inside for some textural contrast. The meatballs on the other hand were okay la.. <br />

Whatchu looking at? S said the crawfish was freezing, and his hands were numb from peeling. The Chinese couple in the table next to us actually brought their own sauce (looks like homemade chili beanpaste) for dipping haha. Kudos for being well-prepared.<br />

Our first serving! After that we went back for one more plate of salty crawfish because S liked peeling it. After that we realised we missed out on the dill mayo for the crawfish!? <br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sher won us a pair of tickets for a cooking class ($118 each) at CulinaryOn. We only had a few classes to choose from as we were reluctant to top-up, so we went for the Sea Club: Warm Octopus Salad (above), Squid Ink Risotto and Pumpkin Pie.<br />
<br />
The class was more appropriate for corporate team bonding events rather than an actual class as most of the ingredients were already prepared for you. But it was fun because there's lots of food and drinks! All the best things in life are free (:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM0ZHofz6YtkCOAzG_BNF3XmeFYeOU_yGMe5OL01DkSNpbg7-rzNBRZIJRKSsVD_iHHIWkS-MksMy2u1U4hVjTszRt3qmUly-5YjWlWuxCCs5-hzoLgnw1F8Q3CxNIro0dl7HzR67NBTw/s640/20160813_175620.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Before the class starts, you get to snack on some lovely cheese & fruits and mingle with the class. There was also freshly baked mini pizzas and a juice bar.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="627" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXzrr4i591wneYEqsdJ-n6jQBoI32Tf96H-J_pLKpiPhkwzDovBpM_Nyf1eOG_tco5US4v5gPxhEL48_rp15AaKUdvMBuW0JwuW9hx4vvuYMD2-Ib9xmu7-BoBvXp_VM7dEbARdzZT_nA/s640/IMG_20160813_204023.jpg" width="640" /> </div>
<div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Rather than cooking your own portions, the whole class worked together to put together this octopus salad. Some were chopping veges, some were searing the octopuses, others were plating up. The octopus wasn't chewy and it tasted more of chicken. Definitely this over squid any day! Unfortunately, this was the best dish of the night.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6AUwZF8HBOlEsgi6X-WMcMUk2YBqK_QSL908pNMetjhUBna7PhkStZb2LdSsfmChSb9RkOjaySIjHKHZv6_sAaasW5cfqQgqpuKj5JGy2dVTIOS5niKbZccLsWoKzDVtQHU5iIGkAY28/s640/IMG_20160813_210517.jpg" width="638" /></div>
<br />
The main course, squid ink risotto! Actually this was so-so only and a tad salty.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq_hvNY38C5jsyIvRaCsUAzzoa4CXP98OIXkoH1ooxMmX-aDJy1YpmdaKU1BKJPUOWi8IUrJsUYIpngpR5qwPBEIePJj-UNJoHNrDIakSym9tAYK6E9JM09yZWB9QCtvdFCNg1yHurRT0/s640/IMG_20160813_232801.jpg" width="638" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By the time we came to the pumpkin pie, we were pretty stuffed. So we had to dabao about half the pie. The pie was decent -- sweet & salty with a touch of cinnamon. But the crust was a letdown, felt airy and not buttery enough.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9mg8LB-wQ-_DHOcrD4WwSbszLk6GHi5d4GLQ-L3anM-rMjftZBqj6dNpeOeZ8PHI9bLgRgNnmXIzx7mOC7touJPEJENr4uX4qvdj0zxryV_rrgleBXxXQcy1X_tsB4efsS21ZFOjI6Pw/s640/20160813_175732.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All the equipment were top of the range and almost brand new. It's a home cook's dream come true to work in such a well-equipped kitchen.</div>

<img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_qseOT666AIZMmWZPnyMw4j0B2Cu1S7CfFD-_mBiDFdicbouCwPi2AEGWK4Aq3A_rAme6CvvsLVU2yw0IX7mk0ikC8FhDd0aQoCYEsxAoMRGmwExSOoyINNBayIm_NgBOxYtAGfQoaZ4/s640/20160813_175737.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cool bar seats where we sat and ate dinner. Can even watch the chef cook -- if only it was just him cooking and us eating ;)</div>

Octopus was already cooked and we just had to slice.<br />

<br />
Making the pie was probably the most hands on. Although it was group work and each one of us only had to do one thing. Like cracking eggs or blending pumpkin.<br />

Using tablets to display the recipes. We hardly used them though as the chef made us do a lot of shortcuts to get the food out quicker. Eg. not blind baking the pie crust, pouring all of the stock into the risotto, liquid nitrogen to cool the pies. Not that we mind though, if not by the time we finished, it would be midnight already.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJHOqLQWwSrdu7V8dPX1ERVP7eqEGaJ4zGpsqnc929vwThL3Jh-Ft7duM4b48DogDw9Ph7NxXTU9sIHJ09ITOXiH_kZF1DmmMuZ4cTDo_wc9QDqahY4VIwDaI3oXNrlClL6qpnkEHVWlE/s640/IMG_20160625_200929.jpg" width="638" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gyoza no Ohsho is a nondescript eatery tucked away in one of the less traversed corners of town. Popular among the working crowd looking for an affordable meal, Gyoza no Ohsho serves an excellent gyoza.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="482" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWWFHzI0NheqHarnrlz_O4snwXdzPF45WMe-EDbXH0IW3Ig-dTCRVzdon_JvzfMCbRUlKPnfUvG0KMyZxRe-ilSd7KrwxnCuQ3dcq-nscfPyh-ZtNzZ_Aw5XH5nESzj3L857dwvxzoRR0/s640/IMG_20160625_201058.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We went for a serving of pan fried gyoza ($5) and deep fried gyoza ($5). Was contemplating between this or the gyoza + ramen set ($17), but seeing that it was meant for tea break (we had a curry puff earlier), we decided to settle for a lighter meal.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX_n1FePbV_RH26Ps9y4iGoxt_23bgtNAzhICeOxb-LHdXch-tKZ7THfLhSjqUZLXBNEEcBOl-BP6jslyNcxjZc4ZdjD_i6PI_raaeNsjsGyVsAp0FuRfZpw19IGZeP6qEESPxWB3Gr_o/s640/IMG_20160625_200732.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Look at how perfect these deep fried gyozas are. Eating these golden brown treats can be quite an addictive affair. Unlike other gyoza places where there's black vinegar or some kind of special dipping sauce, over here you have to concoct your own sauce because the 'pre-mix' is kind of bland. We went for everything -- white vinegar, soy sauce, chilli paste and chili oil!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihrPaX2JHFd1pe4w4xE9nAxvhfYL0vrUCSe6A0_enap5anNgnK0T7iYhNSrp1VLJh-9SlBAFc5Nq0rmPNPDSd05zI4N3SjJuX2QVq6wL5OxR7a5KVTMUkdZmbFB8KKmEGoYVKGci-Jm4A/s640/IMG_20160625_200816.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Pan fried gyozas (: Crisp on the bottom and soft on top. They also sell 'raw' gyozas, which probably means it's just boiled. No thanks, we'll stick with our fried ones please!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="622" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMq2u6k_LUgUZMoQI_rhHHqI60IhANn9Ujhr8tuHNwif6IwLKjpu3kSw6RQ9slZ7eLMSQu3SgXCwdYu7WQLF-hdgTnpedE1Yj-Y7wMqVMh9CPHa-lOus1ATVU36W3DOw23RuKCMGX3eZQ/s640/IMG_20160625_200701.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The minced pork filling was very juicy and flavorful. Could have given us more filling though. The Tenshinhan (Crab meat and egg with thickened sauce on rice) looks quite good though, we need to try that next time!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSW2Bl3lwwy54oTLiVS3zOaI7EtDcSLjKfTDW6ksb2bFoKBsbCBdMwcpIwWyCryFvas0luXP7mELusOpzIKID4jJ8-hg0wSPBgWriYaGy9s_E4c7sOh7GLJmhWykGYwKRmKcYudO99cq4/s640/IMG_20160625_200622.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
By the way, the Selera mutton curry puffs are mediocre. Are the famous chicken ones that good? Let us know in the comments below!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Conveniently located near the CIQ and City Square, Kam Long Curry Fish Head is one of the best eats in JB. Well-known for being cheap and good, the queue at this stall can get pretty insane. Even though it opens till 430pm, the fish head curry usually sells out by 2pm.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhylKCkv3KEKuJ70VlLIHmRUwvfk0lBkJK9J3rrZ0Y-MPemXQE-QoFdepfhnlND3LiLSCqZPD8xAmQOyai8Vy1crk0FiIUNuBodXnboT1wUTiifP4NgEA3KkU0ifjZjtjjX6C7qZkn4ywA/s640/DSC03886.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Good thing we decided to head down early. This was the queue at 10am. We were lucky that we waited for only 15mins. By 1030am, there were at least 20-30 people in line. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRLKVNZX60hs_Lu98eVFyHanMmkf3qSETYnYtJwcCUBHMCe7WWIjeWmumdtC-BqEJyGPrZBvdzAYFb8l0kELdD1A8EiMwszSG4CP5fW0YxCwNx8BiLLL1Fo9XovdO-Z7AeYa0NcIyrCy8/s640/DSC03889.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Look at how cheap the portions are. For RM22 (currently S$7.33), you get half a fish head, lots of vegetables and a bubbling clay pot full of one of the most lemak curry we've ever tasted. The fish meat was firm and there was no fishy aftertaste.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu-JLgFs_Y-RqRTXIYCtRh-dw8Q3DDstRHGMWqT2_C0wK5ePGhfMOd5KA4lw6AgEYWpJdbH468Xt-eNq4BW6i07gFsqABtsdYZ22afKfptd_xsIiD9-QjUeKE2A2dV7KQ4SwS3bgT9I1g/s640/DSC03892.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Sher kept insisting that small was more than enough for two (she read from some other blogger's review). But the guy sitting opposite us (be prepared to share table) was having a medium all to himself. Maybe our stomachs were full from the buffet breakfast earlier, and so we almost couldn't finish the whole pot of curry. We think the medium pot would suffice 2 starving customers for lunch.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
After finishing your meal, it is customary to pay and leave without delay. With so many hungry eyes glaring your way, you would be obliged to. We'll definitely be back for more! Can't stay the same for the popiah and char kway tiao along the Meldrum Walk Food Street though... but that's a story for another time.</div>

We are back from our month long haitus! Last month we were too busy eating (BKK reviews are due soon) we didn't have time to review. Today's review will be on none other than Tendon Ginza Itsuki! Tendon is highly raved for its generous portions of tempura rice bowls.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEdy4rP-2NMsN91lZyBDYT0StUUmwEpCF_z0X2yT4lNfAOfq9CYxadiOXct9SHF36cx8QL6rQrl_8IxeuBrT94JmcV5mR-MfH7TCDX7gAvxvDCs9R4Yo_j7_ogVzGNr_ZXhgZmpoeZES8/s640/P_20160528_171248.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Even so long after opening, popularity hasn't waned. We arrived 15mins before opening and the queue was already insane. Couldn't make it for the first seating ):</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="502" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr0mbD4ytW1lztosxb0N6PRYkqlLT4LijFPNd-_Dd_90GQ_eKxovGgxX4OYkmi4Uc2LGuru-7KxVAZYOu4GpYHkoVt8NIXnNcPIDldJJb_-n3JPiAHX7C8uwxG6GEXfGQwRS1SX3C0aCA/s640/IMG_20160528_192636.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tendon only has two items on their menu. We went for the special ($13.90) which comes which 2 prawns, 2 chickens, 2 long beans, 1 mushroom, 1 corn and 1 pumpkin tempura. It's so much more worth it than the all vegetable set!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaE0MeX81OrmLIrzg5hfgmNeE6NfUcF17nzPNjhsaC5DAH3J8XLDwt1QXB_BTjCYR2tz2gTnDSl0ZBO0Xp2W0EJp2jRNC43IWPHuExggIk1ZA9XZ8niujqnSjdZQRRfFbcOXGl-0WCWtw/s640/IMG_20160528_192750.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
On the house are some pickled vegetables which were kind of bland, like kimchi without the chili.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="630" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig_PRDbW9VbmWBs1Rto8ovUjCsNp4oAMNXdd2N900qsnKUxAkar6NvYatmrM9XgcOzoBNJzKmM4Ojr4gKRhakL4YiT7P56OwZA9xIL5C2a_ZTJ38syeHPDpQCgb3ZQOE7CFFyA4_rTwP0/s640/IMG_20160528_192708.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Served with the tendon is a bowl of miso soup and chawanmushi. This was silky smooth and had a lot of ingredients.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfimNSqFpQrYmDxs8TZgm4xE6DquL8YXmMkeLce3vXA8ULnm9D7aZl_vBkixflXaqGjEi_BAx_qYnvqynRrhbs1huWMaOfFWxXA1TTZGuV4vjFKjTHoLo_J2hpcIDE9UqMW8DG1bi1iqg/s640/IMG_20160528_192934.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not too long later, our tendon was served. The perfectly crisp tempura was stacked on top of the rice and nestled somewhere in between was the runny egg (which was also lightly coated in tempura batter). Even though the tempura already had some 'tendon' sauce on it, it wasn't enough for us so we had to drizzle more on! The portion was so huge, Sher couldn't even touch her rice.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="598" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1bKTLOBVDfszuqZrRpbLuZxw5xICJ-LqL1F8DMaIngXifi5wNmEGvl_7R-pEu-3YQ8yC8VOLOOaGeBz8NxQ9KH-cDLUe0cue02anY8wNrx-_Gb8fhm4d6C5TMgui7bgpD5Ejd0Bot2ss/s640/IMG_20160528_193014.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
At first bite, everything was perfect. However by the time we reached our 2nd piece of chicken, we were growing tired of the taste.. Tendon is a heavy, one dimensional meal that doesn't leave you craving for more. So I guess we won't be back for seconds. After the meal, we all reeked of tendon :'( <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjphMXrgll12MbKSlixuUN_bj12CGxWfZiKyADy0Verqntw_YKVMUkjMSO7Nzec1_JIPjDmxhNXcP1gCX9qst92Q4E1Q1KQPXqaf3V-dhhljlr_UnWYAGh7dtNLDPzldGY5hK9Kyw-We3Y/s640/IMG_20160528_193254.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
The bill came down to a hefty $40.20 :o We paid $3.80 for Ayataka green tea?! It's as ridiculous as Tsubohachi Izakaya Hokkaido at Changi Aiport, where they also charge $4 for non-refillable hot green tea.<br />

House of Gimbap is a small, hole-in-the-wall shop located along Millenia Walk. It's rare to find specialty gimbap shops in Singapore; the only other one we've seen is at Scape. This one has a more upscale look to it though. There was a <a href="http://www.groupon.sg/deals/singapore/house-of-gimbap/721186406"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Groupon</span></a> deal going on so we hurriedly made the purchase. <br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The eponymous gimbap looks pretty on the plate. Taste-wise, it was quite authentic: the beef bulgogi was tender and the pickles were fragrant. S isn't a huge fan of this though -- he claims it tastes 'plasticky'.</div>

Next up<em> </em>was the<em> Doenjangmari</em> soup noodles. Basically, the stock was made from fermented beanpaste and was quite spicy. Besides the noodles (which were very similar to ban mian), there were just a couple of mushrooms and zucchini. Not particularly satisfying.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Spizza Mercato is located at the newly opened Capitol Piazza. With weekday lunch and dinner sets offering good value, its no surprise that Spizza is almost always packed. We dropped by for the dinner set for 2, whereby at $29.90 (<b>Mon-Thu only</b>), we had a choice of 2 drinks, 2 appetizers, and 1 pizza (should be the 12 inch one). S was dying to try the parma ham, which left us with limited choice - we went for the <i>Isabella -- </i>tomato, mozzarella, parama ham, rucola salad and parmesan cheese.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2RYoA2CrMFyHNIF5YVATS4TAfO_RxhLo3lNobYffpdNStA2Me0WEkOL1pyZ1O7Jnl9LLLuPl5HITvD63fUJxZQqnDGa5sWXkc17K5h2cHmSv2GafZf-nainkgIl5et8I27HxDgkSKRGU/s640/IMG_20160402_223638.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Drinks! There's not much to choose from, either you go for the standard soft drinks, or some atas fruit juice.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIh6b_xNPPkX0Ff_WFMt5qmICpuIOGTtvuReEDHcYdRWST2kTV2unE9t689mjwYG3C0aQZiVfG4ax0P29Lf7KmYtK0tlZfHGdRINuXtEL9zge0RIY-_xBgEPjmaO8Ls2vRJJPQl1WuEqg/s640/IMG_20160402_223727.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We decided to go for 1 soup and 1 salad. Our soup was a tasty and rustic cream of wild mushroom soup. This picture doesn't do it justice, but the portion was actually quite huge (enough for 2). On the side was some lightly toasted bread.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="572" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHJF7fvkqFiQ9LESzkcMuiVlr7nIQpHm9YNkj_Z0D6K_FWKhjJFfpSCKoIlO0x46oZDHjudiOTggyoYmyPsliHmRGLWArM-Ab9-cuDhbDGHq6d98cgvjxzx6WcqG9Udoa-m088-cVy3WE/s640/IMG_20160402_223819.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our salad was the classic cesare salad -- chicken breast, crispy croutons, crisp lettuce and shaved parmesan cheese! It was very filling and by the time we were done, there was hardly any space left for the pizza.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv8yp4RzwmN3v-IwiJwOAsIHRJNrxb7UclES0HuzO0wpJeNBUVBygiTO-41SIB_U1TzyHiO-t2cJQ9Nbx0W2GPEUg13qp9kTuzn4ILpne2BGzi_gALr4WM8VYePC8XPz9cvVluWvZSUEg/s640/IMG_20160402_223952.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last but not least, the pizza came with tons of rocket veges! We were shocked by the size of it as this meal could probably feed 3 (We initially wanted to dabao half the pizza back). Sher didnt really like the rocket salad. Other than that, the saltiness of the paper-thin parma ham contrasted well with the freshly baked pizza.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While Spizza is a great place to chill out on a weekday night, they also offer lunch sets ($12 for pasta or pizza) that might appeal to the office crowd looking for a special treat. We might be back to try the pasta!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle's long, snaking queue is unmistakable the moment you step into Old Airport Road Food Centre. We queued for almost half an hour during lunchtime on a weekend. You can opt for the standard prawn mee (dry or soup) or the pork ribs mee, or a combination of both. If you fancy more unique ingredients, there's also pig tail and pork liver.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLbOlcU9GnRMAYJN0lB1rMDkKfnI5B1s4xqFpaQdtdDIqb67n4TTewqDbYaxt_mdXJrpYYLKHDML0OLLOQztcWGDsl48kE1edp0v_4oZAbjs2bnD8itw-9v0Xcek-GU7CEeFvGIYmVhdo/s640/IMG_20160402_222542.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sher went for the soupy version of prawn mee ($4) because she loves the deliciously rich stock. It is so red because all the goodness have been extracted from the prawn shells and prawns heads and gone into the soup. Although the broth is loaded with oil and cholesterol, we slurped up every drop of it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZdiewGEIiSYIXdWxI8fLeJo1sj-SviMCBIDiZg8fssHPCd6wvZ470k7PeCqN2_q5yKIR52X5KxaZgCvFJS0UFMMpmxyhfuz8mE7FK_RB2onIwTFlI7_HKjRPXQ-p-xWQSsE0X5eo9KYM/s640/IMG_20160402_222219.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
S went for the dry prawn and pork rib combo ($5 for small). The dry version comes in a delicious chili sauce and deep fried shallots. The pork ribs were fork tender, albeit on the fatty side. Served separately is a small bowl of prawn stock.</div>
<br />
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq6gT9GcWa3V3gwCVhZt87Rl9GQax-IOgZ6ZMTvR2Dy77Yl-JDNakEyJjkoXBa1apv654kLQ3wyvbIi0ch4QAaQjqp8u3lfrpv2WFN2J1TlwbLV2txPSYbuM_ajDodlSHyUXkvnBzcnpw/s640/IMG_20160402_222359.jpg" width="640" />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The smallest portion is actually not very substantial. We were left craving for more. On hindsight, since were already survived the queue, we should have gone for the larger portion instead. Also on a side note, the popiah ($1.50) from a nearby stall was quite good -- we liked the pleasantly crispy popiah skin.</div>

To get to the famous Outram Park Ya Hua Rou Gu Cha, be prepared for quite a walk. This standalone coffee shop is neither near Outram MRT nor Tanjong Pagar MRT. When we arrived at noon on a Saturday, the place wasn't particularly crowded -- not a very good sign.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Between the spare ribs ($8) and the pork ribs ($7), we recommend the spare ribs because it tends to be more tender (and fattier). If you want more meat and less bones though, go for the drier pork ribs. The soup comes hot and peppery, but somewhat lacking in robustness. Also, for such a premium price, the serving is on the small side.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The free flow eggs are another Keisuke staple, but if you can afford the $2 to get an Ajitsuke Tamago (seasoned soft boiled egg), you should go for it.<br />

While waiting for your ramen to arrive, if you're not taking photos of everything on the table, you can always grind away on those sesame seeds. Add some to give the broth extra depth.<br />

The pickled beansprouts made their return too, alongside a new side dish of nira (chives), cabbage and garlic. We preferred the beansprouts over the chunky raw cabbage.<br />

Sher ordered the rich crab broth ramen ($13.90) -- normal taste, oil and noodles. The standard serving comes with black fungus, bamboo shoots, negi, spring onions and the chashu. Rich crab broth seemed like a no-brainer and stealing glances at the neighboring table's plain looking clear crab broth further affirmed our choice. The broth was salty, rich but started to get cloying after a few more spoonfuls.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
S had the spicy crab broth ramen ($14.90) -- strong taste, more oil, hard noodles. Sounds like a horrid combination. The wait staff warned that the strong taste would be more salty, but he went ahead anyway. The spicy crab ramen also came with the rich broth, but with an added serving of spicy minced pork which gave the soup more body. The hard noodles didn't taste all that different from the normal noodles. Both were springy and had some bite to them.</div>

Kani King is worth a first try. The broth is rich and unique, however, it didn't grow on us. We wished there was some crab meat ($$$) to make the dish more luxurious. We'll probably be heading down to the Lobster King outlet next. It's supposed to be even richer and we can't wait to try (:</div>

We aren't huge fans of high tea but we simply love the rich flavors of Nyonya food! Thanks to Pan Pacific and their awesome giveaway, we got to try their latest Peranakan Afternoon Tea menu -- without forking a single cent (:</div>

Considering the Peranakan set and the English set are both $38++ per pax, and given a choice, there is no doubt that we would have chosen the English one. Undeniably, sandwiches, tarts and pastries are more bang for your buck. One could probably put together most of the Peranakan set by spending a mere $10 at Bengawan Solo. We noticed that many couples were ordering one of each set, which is actually quite a good idea.</div>

To go with your munchies, you also get to choose your drink (tea or coffee). We went for the Earl Gray Lavender and the Chamomile Dream. You can request for hot water top ups if your tea has gone cold. We half suspected that we could have changed flavors mid-way though -- didn't try though.</div>

One of the best things about dining at the Atrium were the semi-private pods, which were very cosy. The highlight of the meal is without a shadow of a doubt, the mouth watering curry chicken! It was rich and super fragrant (thanks to the secret ingredient, rojak flowers!). We would probably be satisfied just having this bowl of curry chicken with the crispy French baguette. They should totally have curry refills. And more of those French baguette.<br />

PigsFly -- similar in concept to Bar Bar Black Sheep -- is a modern coffee shop
selling Thai, Italian, Indian and Japanese food. It also doubles as a bar, so you'll find many expats here at night, chugging beer and watching soccer highlights. For us, the allure of cheap Japanese cuisine offered by Kazoku keeps drawing us back time and time again.</div>
<br />
If you thought the day you come across a chirashi don under $11 is the day pigs can fly, then you haven't been to PigsFly. The Kazoku Don ($10.90) comes complete with salmon, swordfish, tuna, octopus, scallop and ikura. Granted that the sashimi is half as thick and not as fresh as the one's you pay a premium for, honestly, at such prices, set no expectations and you won't be disappointed. The chirashi don at PigsFly will satisfy your immediate cravings without busting a hole in your (boyfriend's) wallet.</div>

The Beef Don ($8.90) is also excellent. It may not be wagyu, but the sirloin steak slices are done medium-rare, still juicy and flavorful. Oh and we forgot to mention, each don also comes with a bowl of miso soup. Now that's some good value.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nestled between the many eateries and restaurants on Purvis Street, Yet Con has stood the testament of time. Apparently, the restaurant has been open for more than 70+ years. Everything about it screams old school: the fading sign board, glass cabinet where the chicken rests, the bare-bones interior and the rosewood counter where an old man, presumably the boss, mans the cash register.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="594" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyuQZaAaaWcx8cPIPeesSo9WnJdBHh1gdhx8mYFBnZ7cQ_1TTv_dBhH-PPmDiukCrkhAJqnXgLJ2HEAyyTnDp0hLhqGPNLxK7pOj5WsqEZ8zLRLaK82aa7XAqokqVhDT_4ifwx-oRsKUA/s640/IMG_20160227_215348.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When eating chicken rice, most of us would agree that what really makes or breaks the dish is the chili. Yet Con's chili was on the watery side and we had to carefully drain most of the liquid away. Same procedure with the ginger. By Sher's (much improved) standards, the chili had no kick.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIhKmi4-XJJl0f4YDiLP9B3fvXcDsyOPA2BNi48-WLd9VKnnzYxe8E2rztSJXCW-50gXV_NraENXFjGPJ4TqVJGPwpmGpY-YOMCmMt1NyWGCSNrVrMtRA_C40uY4-JtBzX2jDL3SVBwGY/s640/IMG_20160227_215445.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The chicken itself we suspected it wasn't boiled and dunked immediately in ice water, unlike other shops. While there was no springy, gelatinous texture to the chicken, we could really taste the chicken flavor and it was quite tender for breast meat. We were also served a huge bowl of chicken soup which had lots of parsley and crisp cabbage floating in it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRgkiBNaW7j76Rbuw5vpIMghXKTh5gn1IN3dA9_nYWP6nQFD84NDsBD1PHPv7pfcySM3SAHNrDP5gj0vRxNX2jYgybQoD7YHGdTUgrgEhaXiYrH4o9TiPEU8vYyq9V5A8XKiqVBE2vLkI/s640/IMG_20160227_215518.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
The entire meal didn't come cheap. A portion for two, with a barley drink, came down to $13.50. <br />
<br />
We might try the other chicken rice stalls along Purvis Street the next time.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Seoul Yummy is extremely popular for its stews and the unmistakable black pan was present on almost every table when we were there. We opted for the Signatures Combo ($48.70 for 1 appetizer, 1 main and 1 dessert). Army Stew (Budae Jjigae) is supposedly one of their must-orders, and we chose the meat (as opposed to the seafood) version. Our Army stew came with a hunk of frozen chicken, pork and beef, assorted vegetables and ... wait for it... sausages, luncheon meat, baked beans and maggi mee -- all of it dumped unceremoniously into a huge pan and left to simmer. Note that the maggi noodles are actually concealed underneath the meat.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="574" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo56BsmDV3ByykjtoPjuQRx5XvCpFB7iQqHRmU63ufkRbWK6BScZ6ybFgikRh5IefiV1I0LPmM5vRpPc5N1mB7zv5qGCcIsB40ABiAkafwQWJC_9c0wLHKM81sfEtv_lDj59TGCfWbncU/s640/IMG_20160305_231954.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next step is simple, just chop everything up and wait for the meat to cook through. For the steep price, not only are the ingredients cheap and poor in quality, they don't even give you a lot of meat. We struggle to see how this pot of Army Stew should even cost more than $10. Many fans have raved about the broth, which we found to be quite tasty and not very spicy, albeit a little on the salty side. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For appetizers, we had the potato pancake. This was pretty decent and we could feel the strips of potato in the pancake. And like most Korean restaurants, you get free flow banchan! Always a small plus.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We chose the chocolate and banana bingsu for dessert. The chocolate ice cream was nice and creamy, the bananas were coated in caramel and sprinkled with crunchy bits. Well in fact everything was yummy except for the bingsu, which was coarser than what it should be. Sigh, what a let down!</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Seoul Yummy is a bit of a misnomer. A more apt name would probably be 'Seoul Expensive' or 'Seoul Uninspired'. It goes too far to milk poor Korean crazed Singaporeans of their every penny. We suggest to avoid this place like the plague, you're better off heading to one of those steamboat buffet restaurants in Bugis -- for just under $20, you can get so much better fare over there. </div>

Nothing beats a hot bowl of peppery Bak Kut Teh on a cold, rainy day. Old Street Bak Kut Teh is a modern take on the traditional Teochew dish. Over at Old Street, you have a fancy iPad ordering system, a dry rendition of Bak Kut Teh and a wide array of dips and sauces.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Don't get me started on the condiments. Apart from the typical dark sauce and chili padi, they also have a chicken-rice-esque chili sauce, raw minced garlic (yummy) and a peanut sauce (yummier). Trust me you'll be spoiled for choice over at Old Street.</div>
<br />
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHJlFxvlOdCWbyaMTDYrW7C5u2IjV-6J1IeN1IUjQoj80I_ZcPxFErs9Ax9PKVzgnCQgqWbzYmBVxmg0gpqAhen3nu4E3nf6BFdQun0hLyukBo0tzzQJhKZBlxtO2lIAw4rmsF1ymcSmM/s640/DSC01661.JPG" width="640" /><br />
<br />
This sweet, creamy peanut sauce is an absolute treat! We don't know what is was meant for, but it goes really well with the pork ribs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
We went for the large portion of Pork Ribs Soup ($10.40). You don't get to choose what cut of meat you want, so our bowl came with a mixture of soft bones and spare ribs -- both were very tender. We found Old Street's soup to be extra peppery as compared to other pepper versions we've had before. Oh and don't forget to ask for refills (:<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To compliment our Bak Kut Teh, we ordered some incredibly expensive braised peanuts ($3.30). Next time, we'll bring our own can of peanuts ($0.70 from Fairprice) ...</div>

Although slightly on the pricey side, we will definitely be back for more Bak Kut Teh at Old Street!<br />

We had earlier wanted to try Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh at Sixth Avenue, but
unfortunately it was raining heavily and we didn't want to risk getting
wet. So when we found Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh at Rail Mail we did not
hesitate to enter. The shop looks new and we weren't sure if it was going to be any good as it was neither lunchtime nor dinnertime.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8uPbZW2ITY5Qzdz_TTZy509digz6S70GvrZn1ngztiZfaBRJR2j72emZoVjVoFW1V1cNondmaKpTf2tVwXaNCt298EaxBD7iqR30UYtlE-bYScNs_P1pJydIAp3uAzpq0J4ALuHKcriI/s640/DSC01779.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
We weren't particularly hungry, so we just went for some Youtiao ($1.60) to dunk into our soup.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
At Pao Xiang, you can choose from various cuts: Neng Gu, Pai Gu etc. We went for the Pai Gu ($6.80 above), because we preferred ours more meaty. Pao Xiang's herbal Bak Kut Teh soup leans more towards a gravy than a soup, and it is a wonderfully rich blend of pork essence, herbs and spices. Although it might look like only a small portion, rest assured you can request for soup top ups. The pork ribs were also excellent -- easily sliding off the bone.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Other than Bak Kut Teh, they do have other interesting offerings like enoki or button mushroom soup (we stole a glance at our neighboring table and it looked like it came with the same rich soup). They also sell braised pork belly, innards and vegetables if you are looking for a bigger spread.</div>

There's many outdated blog posts of Batam out there, so here's one for u if you are thinking of making a trip down. This guide is mostly going to be about the food and shopping (for snacks) because that's all we're interested in! It's going to be quite a long post so grab some munchies and read on~</div>

We got our ferry tickets from Majestic Fast Ferry on Groupon, for about $36 dollars per pax. Good thing is that there were no fine print for extra fees, unlike the hotel+tour+ferry offers on Groupon.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
On a Friday morning, immigration was pretty smooth. All aboard!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWSpY6o4d0bgZ318Us6iCAjre1L6difMfcZ73smHdntyt9hp76BOE1oCQeh9lKrjChe04y9Jaj-b_Ww1UuNEFP6dI8IC48ueTXfK29dI6vQs5lnuzkAgHBQLCituMwYyEmU2iE9Mb-Cpk/s640/DSC01387.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
After clearing Batam immigration, follow the linkway on level two to Mega Mall. It was lunch time and there were quite a few dining options at the mall -- A&W (horrid reviews about cockroaches), Godiva (not the atas chocolatier) and quite a few other restaurants/cafes serving Indonesian food.<br />
<br />
<b>1. Coffee Town (Mega Mall)</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDA3amsZ3IoRD2p7ZSMe8xwdDeyhTfDMEBhOMk7_odxjar_ic0dFDiLg2hvwIqB8pQrq2zOL2KvJ2x3UQxJe5mE-ZVrQvwoW0YonOh7WIqM_igMIr9uCZXxihvn2MzK7iY4LZh_Vu673E/s640/DSC01391.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first thing on our mind was where to have lunch. Unfortunately, the mall was deserted and, Coffee Town seemed the most crowded... if three is a crowd. On hindsight, we would probably have done better at any other Indonesian restaurant in Mega Mall. We started with a very weird tasting carrot juice (22,000RP) which tasted like carrot water...
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-YrFk8lat7rcXlmGw3fl9u51JTYrDzGTWEPpO8IgsQzEC3yYFHtt9GalQUKYTjpwbhiMwxSkhMSZ7gX3jmECWTOIkJhspvExSKb34HDfLSGwSgiPzeX2Sk7tqcn11th5OxLjzW4zLPO8/s640/DSC01394.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
This bowl of Mee Bakso (5,000RP) was soup bowl sized. Taste-wise, it was bland and unappetizing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiErt_JW5p2ml-QqEbmJIvCnM1vM1wXqkYc5l0GWb5T0HKrws62fRIz_eX4UVKNGJbh2bOvIcrNvM5Zf6LrCe0ejCfB7y3n-07sHqJZ2ZEl74vJWI__ULUQm5WbdvdUWtVQm9UU0RNDAuY/s640/DSC01395.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Salted fish fried rice (30,000Rp) was decent and had a decent portion of salted fish. The sambal was nice but S was nursing a sore throat and couldn't really enjoy it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This meal can be summed up with one word: disappointing! After that, we cabbed over to our hotel. It cost about 75,000Rp from Mega Mall to Nagoya Mansion. We got quoted 70,000 initially but it rose to 75,000 after bargaining. Got to brush up on our bargaining skills.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCPcxdHFVDHI1Om3DwUMBrHVfCPOS1Hq5AzJ-bl6RuSOA3vogUsKqUDQrn0TMsautXtRD4XgM_lSkpesgqw8FFro9y_aSOtWxj5Ng0WjejoQ7nBiDPU9UU1QkOnm0C1ULMpRY0awxfq3E/s640/DSC01413.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nagoya Mansion is one of the newer hotels in Batam (about 2 years old). From Agoda, it cost us about S$80 per night after tax. First thing we noticed upon arrival was that the concierge was crammed full of security guards (probably 7 of them, just sitting around on a long bench). Second was that the hotel only occupied the 17th-21st floor and 3rd floor for the reception/pool/restaurant/spa. The other floors were private apartments. Third was with only two incredibly slow lifts, being allocated to the 21st floor made using the lifts a painful process.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhC0C7yqyVQ512mmglPveg_jfAjJZvPwZg_PnxLZ6QZND4viw8SM9irg0rtdmSzbdUmjgCbw9LoUYC90fMX7REg6TceK80o6L-ZGqKXekwzdc4EDTPKj9sXnorNZrU7q7QfYzmu9VAcYk/s640/DSC01397.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The room was well furnished and the bed comfy, not much complaints here.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Toilet was bigger than expected and clean (a definite plus too!).</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the view from our room, with Nagoya mall (the square building with the blue dome) in the distance. Apparently taxi fare in Batam are all fixed prices with little room for negotiation (or perhaps we weren't pushing hard enough). They quoted us 50,000Rp from Nagoya mall to our hotel, which we obviously rejected! By the way, it's only a 10mins walk and the streets are safe enough to walk even at night -- just watch where you are stepping on because there were hardly any street lamps. </div>

<br />
The hotel's pool was tiny and got very crowded fast as somehow there were so many kids when we stayed there.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Warung Cobain (Nagoya Mall)</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For dinner, we walked down to Nagoya mall. Nagoya mall is probably the biggest and best (we haven't seen BCS mall though) in Batam. It has a food street and many many restaurants. We dined at Warung Cobian, an Indonesian food chain restaurant. Warung Cobian also has an outlet at Mega Mall which we missed on the way into Batam. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

If you thought the iced tea (right) was sweet, it pales in comparison to the iced milk tea (left). We're willing to bet that a whole can of condensed milk went in there.<br />
<br />

<br />
This was Sher's favourite dish, some kind of raw vegetable salad with peanut sauce (ala Gado Gado) and crushed Belinjau chips. Be warned though, this dish is extremely spicy. Looks like her chilli training paid off.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Ayam Bakar (grilled chicken) had a nice char grilled taste, however, it was extremely tiny.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The fried duck thigh was served bone-dry and dripping in black oil and was quite a turn-off. Worst thing was it wasn't even fried, the skin was still rubbery and impossible to remove with a fork and spoon.</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
S was a huge fan of the Sambal Ijo (cooked green chilis). It wasn't very spicy and had a sour/sweet taste to it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Sayur Asem (spicy and sour vegetables soup) was very tasty and had lots of vegetables in it. Corn taste a bit raw though.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLs5xLMw4TpcpoAz0Gw4Xq18dPFKevXAfF5geKgfUjoWsKU1xWvLrRzbypK8xo8cehyFJ42wJ8Ycr_mf1qXUZU5hRrJIplV84U-1CrkgZOysSnvOMvv5nDMpnjngCiProTP58irR6wHWQ/s640/DSC01445.JPG" width="640" /></div>

Our total damage for this meal came down to S$11, which was so incredibly cheap and worth it.<br />

<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: justify;">We would suggest not to buy the Rotiboy (9500Rp) at the food street. Although cheap, and looks authentic, it was tasteless and dry to boot.</span><br />

Sher really likes her fried onions and spring onions. There were more of those than porridge.<br />
<br />

Our favourite omelette and sunny side up eggs. Note that the queue at the eggs station was insane (at least 45mins - an hour's wait)<br />
<br />

Prata made to order. It was meh. We read some reviews that the prata was good. But ours was so chewy that we had trouble cutting it with a fork and spoon.<br />

<b>5. Ayam Penyet Ria (Nagoya Mall)</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg3SkBwGfVc1uCz92dbUhuM_wPjhQrS3TJSg75WfNSkfeieHxQrPRbDq2RO6J8_zu1YcZSVpwE09afHc5CgVd4L_lrkjPEETaJQYNhEkkkdYe21Gii1czp-54T0sK344qTZC_6IfEPVEI/s640/DSC01477.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For those of you who are wondering if this Ayam Penyet Ria is related to the one in Lucky Plaza, the answer is yes! We haven't tried the Singapore outlet, so we decided to give the one at Megamall a shot.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBvWxMthtGNCZqHF77QHdshxGRGAGMBOyuVfLSWpzfD76ukqTBBhxL5nHlHBfBXXJ54kCSgr7jGIyI01T4dBye3uP43nLLysXx622DjwaZsxHHXkCWFaeoLEDSwc2GrxickVt3DYBiqpw/s640/DSC01481.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We sat at the open air food street. Although damn sunny and hot, it was better than stuffy, smokey and hot in the Ayam Penyet Ria shop we suppose.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Lemon Tea & Lime Juice (15,000Rp each).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4w_Ve0QVgR44nFnNgylxbKEGf7n6VrrCdhYKNXohkDkZ4gkijlI6zN-HfrPPQKv_6lBFKhHBsIXxYED7BkOpOegBNDeEuyVK0lBOl6WfrlicNDNTTHxQNcaQHMziGHfduaDoX46yBm04/s640/DSC01488.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Sher's fav gado gado (15,000Rp). It was full of crispy keropok, eggs, ketupat, and vegetables, all of that doused in a flavorful but mildly spicy peanut sauce. Could probably be a meal on its own. The portion was so huge that we had trouble finishing it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The eponymous Ayam Penyet i.e. smashed fried chicken (15,000Rp). Raw vegetables aside, the rest of the dish was delicious. Although the chicken was small, it was tasty and perfectly complimented by the sambal.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcXqp1JV9sacxJLtk9VdRczQu58P5vFtbrvGjHavj65O4NdfJqwYWmXdGvog7K-CHKwkzaCc7DcmD_Ey4__-wvvHB0EEq77Maqhql3x660xVUJcYn7QQT55uRAzHpWFszMWeNZOcii9DY/s640/DSC01494.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Next up was the Lele or smashed fried catfish (24,091Rp). This was quite hard to eat because the fish was very bony. This was very similar in taste and texture to your kuning fish in Nasi Lemak.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimGTMmwdFzqJMfbX-a9L7exEgWp5x6cGvifqBVD9KMhwTssV4raVEpwS81xeuTIwi0JcbQVJORHTctIVhv7E54ywy59-5amXU7M_BqsMrBDaF__J57ybq0xyTGBvddEN-DT7-23jejcbw/s640/DSC01500.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
S insisted we get a serving of Teri Cabe Ijo (9,091Rp). This wasn't as spicy as the one at Warung Cobain, and as an added bonus, it came with crispy ikan bilis.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDLTtXEb3LUPkyVaoeUpcbvwwYzvhLeznfgm7z4OeUWGtT-QAIpNTP9RiSe-GkZJ4LNkte6coNziKQAG8LEPWZew8e_z4COPtp9lrnm-B1-a20WKgbnG_Bg3ArL2bqbJUaUwAcWtiyiSo/s640/DSC01501.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Total damage : 110,331Rp (S$11). Overall, a very satisfying meal. We would suggest having it at night though, or else you'll have to eat in the hot sun (or the stuffy shop).<br />
<br />

<br />
Do not buy this at Nagoya mall supermarket. Cost us 4,000Rp each we seemed decent, then we went to Habor Bay mall and we discovered that they were going at only 2,000Rp each. #FeelingCheated<br />

<br />
As it was our second last day in Batam, we went on a mad shopping spree in the supermarket. Most of the loot was Sher's!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirEuulMKe1RHpuRSNMuotQt7Cg40ojZV6G0Td6Cgp8s_Jv68XKhnsiJMD6Xkw7rLuDqRH-v0HfOZOvke1sPEBQXexJ_7YnsqPlXF0LFpKFURPzXNEKkD8FBrHgTHBTGdlP04qgvfh3cQQ/s640/DSC01515.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Throughout our trip, we were scouting for where to buy the best kueh lapis. Eventually, we settled for La Moist. The premium ones with butter cost us 140,000Rp for small (280,000Rp for large) with prunes.</div>
<br />
<b>6. Wey Wey 2 Live Seafood (Harbor Bay) </b><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The taxi dropped us off at Harbour Bay Mall, which consisted of a dilapidated shopping centre connected to a the hotel. The only shops open of interest were probably the supermarket (not Carrefour anymore), a J.CO which had better looking donuts than the one at Mega Mall and Godiva Cafe. No wonder our driver kept insisting (in semi-decent english) that we go to BCS mall instead. Within walking distance were the seafood restaurants situated along the waterfront and the nearby Harbour Bay Ferry Terminal which had an open air duty free area. After combing the area for signs of life, we sadly headed over to Wey Wey 2 Live Seafood for our seafood feast. We chose Wey Wey 2 because it had the most lively dining area.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-JvZdR8GqPHkpya3iQj3VxT3ZsDVPNNCdZZs1RBsuqN2wYhECOlGLvL49DGHaC7F6vzW6BQ1cUSok_EO8uGbVEiM-3HvXPDtEQLUhxc4c-fRFtlVYEmJEXpmUdaM_3BgT2w4KOJSZ0TY/s640/DSC01522.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As other bloggers might have mentioned, the sea doesn't smell good. And it's probably not just Wey Wey. We found out why -- they were sweeping the trash/leftovers straight into the water. Oh well, at least when they started cooking the food aromas quickly covered up whatever stench was emanating from the putrid water.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For drinks we settled for an overpriced Bintang Beer (33,000Rp, supermarket sells about 13,000Rp) and Lemon Tea (15,000Rp). As usual, any drinks to do with fruits just tasted bland.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
We decided to try Mantis Prawns two ways - steamed and fried. At 50,000rp per prawn, this didn't come cheap. The steamed prawn was juicy, and had a curious sweet aftertaste.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQTGXfW7gS6zdbAVL0XZEc2N3HZLME_DoCEek_BrzIDbkKjpskIkWH8JETdFpQBsPXvzheVolDM49PaJYgTrQNa5C2ALtzET8a_wIP8XMGn6zVpGRD_B6dMtMW9SosqCk7kmb4ed5KjSI/s640/DSC01536.JPG" width="640" /><br />
<br />
The fried mantis was highly recommended by the waiter. We thought there would be some special sauce to go with it, but turns out it was just lightly fried with garlic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGBQgHPIdr9j7h_OEOEt9bb5mKbxqyT_dbnwIp3l333NnQDkK6-GMovIWxnARSvENWKrIejmvi0LafIwZ9kyJXkwTyWVtMlFEJJlK-5oaI_gBWuQkKrHqCgxM2OcSe9yJMk2ON7Hhs3mw/s640/DSC01538.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Lala fried with eggs and chili (35,000Rp) was a bad order. The shellfish were tiny and there was hardly any flesh in them. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-kRTZElYGAHrmV-_z3YWrgc9lANn2GwgX7DUqFVvqv7plBFpu9QfvTj7zr2e-2Q0EDPhNlvqW2uroLimGtNrbPPVGDGVB8504-mNAD2KbLaTldHu6sJC6GLrpWlDd0Owpimpk5Ye7PF4/s640/DSC01539.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
We also had a plate of Baby Kailan (20,000Rp). Small, unassuming portion.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBAGNQTWXDsu0Zbcd4eLTgv6yGhLeKl8bydqJL6klU4mT2oEGbPi13dJ9_bxnklcTfdXuXyloE66mLS5DwnOFHX4j8yO2qyc7FvdOf6KCSArn-uYRP48q9y3HYZDq4kiyqyRR3B4wnsIs/s640/DSC01540.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Bawal Emas Steam (600g- 144,000Rp) - We ordered pomfret steamed Hong Kong Style. This was probably the best dish so far because the fish was big and fresh.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4maS9aBIV6byyzZgCx75MwP8_xt6aJESf0NX6l_eXlrn14ZLROPUsKkA9hSYzASnbX2WCrc1Y5-DL4o8a6Gjcl_4FtG2psIm4o-1ct0Y6uIhM3z4yeG7H_f3kwZPTXh6BagGLTYLNBTQ/s640/DSC01544.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Total damage: 357,000Rp (S$36). That's a steep price to pay for a rather disappointing meal. Oh well, at least now we know not to visit Harbor Bay ever again!<br />
<br />
<b>7. J.CO (Harbor Bay Mall) </b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
While waiting for our ride back to hotel, we dropped by the mall for JCo donuts - 8,000Rp each. These ones look a lot better than those at the Megamall outlet.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
We also headed down to the supermarket to grab some Haagen-Dazs. This tiny tub cost us about 35,000Rp. Expensive.. but we were craving ice cream.<br />
<br />
<b>8. Baresto Cafe (Mega Mall)</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Time flies when you are doing nothing. And soon enough, it was our last day in Batam and we had a ferry to catch. But first, we had to find something to satisfy our stomachs and so we stopped by Baresto Cafe at Megamall. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
What better to order for our last Batam meal than Ayam Penyet. This one was probably better than the earlier one at Ayam Penyet Ria. The chicken thigh was juicy and flavorful. As usual, S wanted the one with Sambal Ijo.</div>

The prawns weren't the freshest we've come across but the cereal was nice and crisp and the portion was generous. So overall, an acceptable dish! <br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We had a huge assam fish which came with lots of veges (which only S eats). The fish was quite fresh, no fishy taste and whatnot. This fish cost us about 40,000Rp - about the same as our coffee.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Can you believe it? We had 4 dishes and 2 drinks and this meal was only S$19. The drinks were on the pricier side about $3 - $5 each. Had we known earlier, we wouldn't have hesitated to dine at Baresto's when we arrived in Batam.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That pretty much sums up our Batam Trip: lots of feasting, supermarket shopping and idling around. When it was finally time to return to the hustle and bustle that is Singapore, we were in for another nasty shock -- the departure immigration queue. As suggested in other blogs, go about 2hrs early and be prepared for lots of unpleasant jostling.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Koreans certainly have a penchant for misspelling English words (ironically, misspelling is often misspelled by everyone) and for bad usage of loanwords. Mangled English can be rather amusing, but in some cases it is just annoying. In the case of Churro 101, 'churro' is rightly singular. This is because unlike other churros stalls, where you get a cupful of 3 inch morsels, over here what you get is one long churro.</div>
<br />
<img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOLY2N_r4CdQ6OeREqYy40ZAy0xXnZ66JqtxkH-NGUR5WgcV3yLSeXEUx9e2BPGPIIHzzRXLyV2lXeEpgzePXDgbzbXyATlUipUv9_CKX_dihVXUS8I8XaUB58hbsRoHufHfOl5kBWBcw/s640/IMG_20160206_215613.jpg" width="640" /><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Because Sher had an ice cream craving, we went for the Ice Cream & Churro Set. We were contemplating between a filled churro vs a coated churro. In the end, we decided to go for the signature chocolate-filled churro ($5.90+$0.50 for the filling).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="544" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX5ox0gMzCUv7HWJsycRUDFLHjeT63tcfI7mXWjGD7ABRWbJJ8d3pwMCb9VHsZEggNxJdbu2KXenhzYKLB4Azzz6oDW_V9m3JI2NrYY4FeAIEVYpWDsvm_WF79FrgZ6ma2VxcoftKpouM/s640/IMG_20160206_215725.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Just looking at the amount of oil used to deep-fry the churros makes us feel fat already.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
By default, your churro will come coated in cinnamon sugar. Ours was then drilled through the middle and filled with a yummy dark chocolate ganache. We liked the way the crisp churro contrasted with the warm rich chocolate. However, we can't say the same for the soft serve, which was subpar. We would recommend giving the soft serve a miss and just go for their churros. For us, we will definitely return to try the dark chocolate almond coat. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A more apt title for this post would be Toa Payoh Blk 92 Coffee Shop (10-15 mins walk from Braddel MRT) because we are going to review two stalls! The famous Kim Keat Hokkien Mee and Ocean Fish Head Curry. We had particularly high expectations for the former because we've been seeing so many Instagram videos of this hokkien mee bubbling contently in their rustic claypots. There were six of us, so we ordered two servings ($5 each, small). Unfortunately, despite all the hype, this hokkien mee did not live up to our expectations. Yes the seafood was fresh but the noodles were horribly overcooked, and the gravy wasn't particularly tasty -- overall it was average at best.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="602" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4RRmEdc4rN770BHqMzTXsfchKe_C9dGIntXPpCmasO5cWkX2FmiQLeVF3uPHW93kgzZUEzWfrcWeqbBAdWFYMqQ3r_Tj2elLJhkMKcDQ0hXWgHTAE_T1pa03Y-oga3bE9tZVnSLtEfN8/s640/IMG_20160116_235041.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since we were next to <i>the</i> Ocean, we decided to get ourselves some Claypot Fish Head Curry ($36). We were given a pretty big fish head (ang goli), and with it a generous portion of lady's fingers, brinjal, tomatoes and onions. The curry seemed a tad watered down, but was still tasty enough. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="528" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHK9wbGypJkmELSy_YnLam-1qev1A_2X68bMk5vX7BpUosmiuJlUt8Dvr03RWvNI-taJxDqMkvcW2igYk3L7ynTOOzLb3T-iTuLQhR_2qTNSd-1tkrKZZ6-44jG-007nfU4V4vtGbEMK0/s640/IMG_20160116_235205.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
For those of you who have been to Ocean, you'd also know that it sells other dishes besides fish head curry. Not made-to-order tse char mind you, it's more of a glorified cai fan stall. And it doesn't come cheap -- this plate of chye sim set us back $4. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="488" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjzJ2zoSJop_oQNO80dhEA00NEuCCYxQAjTLznw_rQmtL6m_BywDUyKfeRGfA07wPwjnMwbFw9OAIfSrQyhakPV3ZOYIV-m9QlueUmBjfMPmbM6XPeLWatfPZqtCGn7jKK6fh-WmCbsOA/s640/IMG_20160116_235246.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Their Sotong ($8) was surprisingly good though. Tender and glazed with some yummy soya sauce / teriyaki sauce, it tasted as good as the ones you'd find at those Takashimaya Hokkaido Fairs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="506" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjJUvNYxLAl2acuVGfTcr49r9n0M66HnuS0qWOZibtf6Cm_1vafLtjY9ruTstXvZPoWYwFuv_QzJxtSSlf7rCBvBz7L_xjOwKlCiz5lCD8FvoDfLWdV4T8tTUXlQsE2EiDuJe6nMFYMv0/s640/IMG_20160116_235328.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
We also had a go at their Salted Egg Yolk Prawns ($8). It was still warm and quite tasty... but you can't help but feel that freshly cooked would have been so much better.<br />
<br />
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLFfv68HqgenpyF2qhxVY9JJHruqGMVabZUEgq35VZTLjxbHtjxU2zYGc6z-NjVS7lFyF8V7njoF1dAkCB-OifyDVv2tKzpRZgpc5Zb4Rp-yRRhm0cUuGWYDE3FHSj-oaGEd14mj2U8BM/s640/IMG_20160116_214730.jpg" width="640" /><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Looking up from our meal, we found the coffee shop to be outrageously packed. People stood around us, eyeing our every bite, waiting for the moment where we would stand up and they would get their long awaited seat. Lots of people were also dabao-ing cai fan from Ocean. Apparently, some people don't mind paying tse char prices for cai fan.</div>

<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5nCyIxyD_92cLo-HQ_7uwOCmDzctkVuqcQZRzteM1yFXCC9Xe84sQd8e0Wm2X2dWzNIGLhJaNpDk3yVqly-rXoGPaMmUtD6SyM8Ss1Kr7aRcSn8BTmjUb3rLpiAsGO_wH3jlP95RLRZ4/s640/DSC01904.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We were kind of in a EOY/CNY festive mood, so with S's family in tow, we headed down to Serangoon Gardens to try authentic Nyonya food at Pow Sing. There are two Pow Sings; Pow Sing on the left serves ordinary tze char; Pow Sing Restaurant (below) is the one that we were headed to.</div>
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxE7f1jWxGQUzgQVZ4SNtRpzUcTOXDLFs9zeYr0_JPYoBsPm8zcmXTE4h-6oFhYNauadPf_ymsaqsgfVyoEi1cp3a1NXiF6E54-tG3ynRdjWaBc8XTK3wNR9QuAmAV-td2SiZGqWjA0nc/s640/DSC01871.JPG" width="640" /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
You can't miss the huge rooster sign.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkB7OWwnlita3Mv-f4CaKd1FKHTQJ8hWD4Ygq5g69brPbnZ1eHnQkLJ8c8HBN9a1hyspI4-C5pJ8koomL326eYXBgkRCHGyYsAWD8JUn6GyY2f1WVXd3duvVWmHOX8bcjL6l6lt2zRwiY/s640/DSC01888.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Pow Sing Restaurant's interior is rather cramped, with neighboring tables too close for comfort. It is advisable to make a booking as it can get really crowded for dinner and you'll have to wait a long time for a table.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0v_79sRl_yi2ZeiWn2IWvZRyBVUPD_JfahgVkPOz1Y-G7RJjE19h7RnvUSIZ1IYsBxCAhH80_9x6DdtWRbforvF-_8D9f35s7MPYhw0YJVVZkIRtRveErHKqY03omrbRMBt7zu66D9n4/s640/DSC01884.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Achar & Peanuts ($3) are not complimentary, but you wouldn't want to miss out on the Achar which was deliciously piquant.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4dZq2e1L5P0s5aAkLSMDOEXiFqZC9Y-qEtEwJKTWWBZcs73vaEyKqdYK8YetQuEP3E3EEXMT3_leCittiULUnzF4q-U4fq_wrw2VJr43hZzZV6jFtz11z6jmkwSRx6svNPac04P0Zrlk/s640/DSC01895.JPG" width="640" /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
You can't go wrong with the Chicken Rice ($14, half chicken) at Pow Sing. The chicken was extremely tender and was perfect with the special chili sauce and ginger.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibkZMN-hrOsApCtptOh-Jfn-srtrnb_Ep8iz0o7i9AB9Maw1ta7DueTUeLc-5W9hdhDb5Yd5Mo2Q25njMMBebgA-v4aiCzZU-m0LZ6bJEg-8xZFlKcQrie84hEii7KQHuxt4JDJsjDEJM/s640/DSC01890.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Sambal Kang Kong ($13, medium) arrived just the way S's family loves it -- with extra spicy sambal belachan and full of wok hei.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE9L-95JM0ga3jHR2pXB2zYMj4ggWePUYM3K-SMGXZAkopptvJeJ-JzpH-wMG7Nz1bXndwMgaL1H4exMUmbs3l1fhqBBe8Jw8PUvkbK_Ds8MdRgx2exW5h76xeSaXv7w76ZReU3oeKF4c/s640/DSC01891.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Next up was the signature Sambal Prawns ($20 for about 8 prawns). The sambal sauce leaned more towards being sweet rather than spicy and the prawns were very fresh and plump.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl4ipjTgpq-QrayBUqOtq6N36l43i-17u_msJ8UbAusKFu_6NH4g6tvyhi7wg99svDAGM7Up79HhUHcsGrabHMQ4i7QHcvv5eBDowfBak1QHff6Nmi1aV_MySbjgJ2dCydSyhgfnbpFWY/s640/DSC01899.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
Opting for something safe, our Claypot Tauhu ($15, medium), came with a decent amount of mixed vegetables, layered pork and the silken tofu. But as always, tofu seems a tad pricey.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh06cftyjFg6ugEJ87LDiNcvaSBCTKSQmr4a0B9vSJuTLBDr5VCPtX4MPJNzT8Lopd9GSOwjrg6Nc0ZJZFUJc4mKbcqL6tBLL6MpcL6gp63rpqFiYluIKjtlmMTzNFreZ6Qu1SE3WaI8Ts/s640/DSC01900.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Nyonya Salad ($9, small) was surprisingly refreshing. Although it consisted of mostly the ingredients Sher doesn't like, eg. ladies fingers and pineapple. Crushed peanuts were scattered over the salad, resembling rojak.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcseMHAV1tDj-0Q20CtBbgG2P-85Vjd3IISSWsf86g_9FgldVG63JxilhDb7OqQFBpb8DV9xcswesZ9eyGgYM7Vb-X4WjocWrc8qEJ-DLx9nPEkxB_uw7vWk1T7prHayt9A67UkoPfN04/s640/DSC01903.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The dish that S has been waiting the whole night for -- Ayam Buah Keluak ($13, small). This was the tamarind version, and although it looks spicy, it's far from it. The Buak Keluak (black nut), is apparently highly toxic (contains cyanide) and a requires a lot of careful preparation before it can be eaten. Sher says it tastes like assam chicken.</div>

Let's take a closer look at the Bua Keluak. It's actually full of this black paste that tasted a lot like black bean paste... intriguing but falls short of expectations. What we did was to dig the paste out of the nut and then smear it all over the chicken pieces. Unlike the chicken rice chicken, this one was kind of dry. Turns out that not everyone at the table was keen on the dish, but we had no qualms about eating ;)<br />

Overall, our dining experience at Pow Sing was a mostly positive one. Service was brisk and the food was good. We'll probably be back for the Itek Sio (Nyonya braised duck with tamarind and coriander).</div>

Knowing how overpriced Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice) can get in Singapore, you'd be glad to know that you can get your Bingsu fix at One Ice Cafe without blowing a hole in your wallet. While the Bingsu here looks far less photogenic than say, Numsaram at Westgate, it tastes quite decent.<br />

This is the original Patbingsu ($6.80), and it comes in a 6 inch bowl -- more than enough for two. Toppings are just vanilla ice cream, azuki beans and cornflakes. You'll find the rice cakes and jelly buried somewhere inside the pile of ice. Speaking of the shaved ice, it was creamy but not sweet at all.</div>

On the other hand, the Peanut Bingsu ($6.80), basically screams peanuts. Below the layer of peanuts there was a layer of ice and then, you guessed it, more peanuts. We wished there was more of the shaved ice.<br />
<br />
We would definitely come back to One Ice Cafe again for its no frills approach to Bingsu (: <br />
